Registering a used vehicle from the USA

In order to register the vehicle, the following is required:

  • The vehicle registration document and Certificate of Title
  • A Vehicle Import Form (Form 1) from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)
  • A Casual Goods Accounting Document (B15) from the CBSA
  • A “passed” Vehicle Inspection Report from a Designated Inspection Facility in BC

Check the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement website

You are required to have a signed and dated bill of sale if your vehicle is not registered and titled in your name. Having a Certificate of Title signed by the registered owner of the vehicle, which also names you as the new owner, will also be sufficient rather than a bill of sale.

It may be useful to call the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV). They will be able tell whether or not your vehicle will be able to be imported into Canada. Their job is to authorize that the imported vehicle meets US specifications when entering into Canada. You can contact the RIV at 1-888-848-8240.

The vehicle than can be licensed and insured in BC after vehicle registration is complete. Any Autoplan broker in BC can register, licence, and insure the vehicle for you.
